When seventh grade English teachers Mrs. Tidwell and Mrs. Kuttanna wanted their students to reflect on community as they read the book SeedFolks, by Paul Fleischman, they turned to MinecraftEdu to have students create their own community garden. The setting of the book is in Cleveland where various characters unknowingly have a passion for gardening for one reason or another. They come together to create a garden in a vacant lot and grow from that experience. Mrs. Lind, Instructional Technology Specialist for Grisham, modified a Minecraft world of a large city for the lesson by re-creating the trash-ridden vacant lots in the city. Students acted as the book characters and worked together to clear the lots of trash. Then they tilled the ground, planted seeds and watched as the lots became beautiful gardens.
